The doctor decides to make a family pedigree for Nancy to provide further support that Jessica should be genetically tested for familial hypercholesterolemia. Andrew and Nancy are both 32 years old. Nancy is healthy with no cholesterol problems. Andrew is slightly overweight and loves foods high in saturated fat. His LDL levels were 250 mg/dL at his last two checkups and his doctor has him on Lipitor for moderate control. Andrew is adopted and so his family history cannot be constructed. The doctor turns to Nancy’s family. Valerie and Nancy’s mother, Diane is a healthy 54 years old. Her husband, John died of a heart attack shortly after the twins were born when he was 38 years old. Nothing else is known about John’s family history concerning cholesterol or heart problems. Diane’s sibling, Terry, had a stroke at the age of 56. Terry has been severely overweight for most of their life and continues to eat a diet high in fried foods and saturated fat. Diane’s brother, James, is still living and healthy at age 63. Diane’s mother, Elsie, died at 65 from a heart attack. Elmer, Diane’s father, is 85 years old with no known cholesterol, circulatory, or heart problems. Valerie has been concerned about hearing about her identical twin’s problems with Jessica. She is concerned that her newborn fraternal twins could have issues with hypercholesterolemia. She decides to investigate her husband’s family to determine if he could be a carrier. Valerie’s husband, George is a 34-year-old marathon runner in excellent health. His sister Emily is 37 and a professional athlete and in excellent health as well. George and Emily’s parents (Robert and Shelia) are in their 60s and in relatively good health. They are active seniors and run a nutritional support program in their retirement community. Both take Zocor for moderately high cholesterol despite their healthy lifestyle. Robert does not know of cholesterol or heart problems in his family. Shelia’s father, Charles, died from a heart attack at 68. Her mother, Bertha, died from coronary artery disease.
