Sangrilla, a 2-year-old, started having a cough, runny nose and congestion. 3 days later she developed a high fever, followed by shortness of breath. As she was having difficulty breathing, her parents brought her to see her pediatrician who sent her for a Chest X-Ray. After reviewing the X-ray, the pediatrician ordered a blood and sputum culture and started her on treatment with Erythromycin for 14 days for pneumonia.3 days later Sangrilla’s blood culture reports are negative. Sputum cultures had > 25+ epithelial cells/LPF. It grew Hemophilus influenzae and Coagulase-negative staphylococci. The chest X-ray showed patchy areas of consolidation and she is improving. Suggest that the physician consider a viral infection, as maybe her syndromes are viral and probably the antibiotics could be stopped. Request a repeat sputum culture be done as the cultures show contamination. Nothing to suggest at this time, other than to continue monitoring and documenting symptom progression.
