Helly is trying to make a resignation request, but when she tries to leave, she finds herself trapped in her “outie” and refuses to let her quit. Seth Milchick, the supervisor, guides her through the severance process, explaining that her work-self will wake up in a few hours while her outside-self resumes life later that evening. Helly undergoes the severance procedure, where doctors drill into her brain to implant the device that splits her consciousness. “The more intelligent the work, the duller the worker and the more he becomes a slave of nature” (Marx Alienated Labor, pg. 3). When she attempts to leave, she ends up back in the stairwell, realizing that her work self is resisting the situation. Milchick convinces her that she does want to be there, and she reluctantly returns to work. Meanwhile, Mark settles into his new role as department head, removing framed photos of his former colleague Petey from the office. Helly meets her coworkers Irving and Dylan, who introduce her to the bizarre incentives of Macrodata Refinement, including finger traps and caricature portraits.
