An Analytical Essay on Neil Perry in Dead Poets Society The novel Dead Poets Society by NH. Kleinbaum is about a group of boys at a very strict school called Welton Academy one of the main characters is Neil Perry. Neil is a smart and kind boy, but he has many problems in his life the book is sad because it shows how Neil can’t follow his dreams. Welton Academy is a hard and boring school the rules are very strict and the teachers are very serious. The boys must wear uniforms and always follow the rules this setting makes the students feel like they have no freedom Neil is someone who wants to be free, but he goes to a school where he can’t do what he wants. Neil is a friendly and happy boy at the start of the book. He likes to make people laugh and he loves life, but his biggest problem is his dad Neil’s father is very strict and never listens to what Neil wants he only cares about Neil becoming a doctor and doing what he says. Neil trys to talk to his dad, but his dad does not listen, this relationship is very important in the book. It shows how Neil feels trapped and sad. When the new English teacher Mr. Keating comes, Neil starts to feel better. Mr Keating is not like the other teachers. He tells the boys they should enjoy life and follow their dreams. Neil listens to this and feels excited he wants to be an actor and act in a school play, he joins the play in secret even though he knows his dad won’t like it acting makes Neil feel happy and free. But when Neil’s father finds out about the play he gets very mad he tells Neil he is going to take him out of Welton and send him to military school. Neil feels like his whole life is being taken away. He doesn’t see any way to change things this shows the theme of freedom and control, neil wants freedom but his father controls every thing neils life becomes too hard for him to handle. Another big theme in the book is identity. Neil wants to know who he really is he wants to make his own choices and be happy, but the people around him don’t let him, his father the school, and the teachers all tell him what to do. Mr. Keating is the only one who tells him to follow his heart but in the end Neil can’t do that because his father is to strict. The message of the book is how too much pressure can hurt people Neil is under so much pressure from his dad and the school, no one listens to him. He feels alone the Dead Poets Society is a place where the boys can be free for a little while they read poems and talk about life, but even that is not enough to save Neil. The message is that people need to be heard and free, or they can be broken. The book is easy to read and has short sentences, The words are simple but still show big feelings like sad and hope. When sad stuK happens, the writer don’t use alot of words and it feels more real. welton is a cold place with lot of rules, the forest is not like that it is quiet and free. the boys like the forest more then the school. they can be themselfs there but it dosent save Neil. Neil Perry is a very sad character, he is full of dreams and wants to be happy. But his father and the school stop him from living the life he wants. The themes of freedom, identity and control all show why Neil’s life is so hard the message is that young people need to be free to choose there own life. If they can’t the pain can be too much, the novel shows this in a simple and emotional way that makes you feel sorry for Neil.
