After reviewing the readings for this module, I observed that a significant source of conflict in healthcare settings arises from various professionals’ differing roles and responsibilities. A common conflict occurs between nurses and physicians due to their distinct perspectives on patient care and what they consider to be priorities. This can lead to misunderstandings, communication breakdowns, and ultimately a lack of courtesy in the workplace. The impact of these role conflicts can be detrimental to both patient care and the work environment. When nurses feel that their concerns are dismissed or undervalued by physicians, it can result in burnout, decreased job satisfaction, and a reluctance to voice important observations regarding patient conditions. This not only compromises the quality of care but also fosters a tense and hostile atmosphere among team members. Conflicts between nurses, physicians, and other clinicians threaten to disrupt team collaboration and negatively influence patient and family well-being, job satisfaction, staff burnout, intention to quit, and health expenditure (Hartog, 2015). To prevent rudeness stemming from role conflicts, an organizational approach that emphasizes interprofessional education and collaboration can be beneficial. Creating opportunities for nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to train and learn together fosters a deeper understanding and respect for each other’s roles and contributions. Encouraging teamwork and shared decision-making can help decrease the likelihood of conflicts escalating into disrespect among team members, ultimately promoting a more positive work environment. I believe it is essential to provide communication training to all healthcare staff. This training should focus on active listening, conflict resolution techniques, and respectful communication strategies. By equipping staff with these skills, they will be better prepared to effectively communicate and resolve conflicts.
