A woman brings her 6-month-old daughter to the pediatrician. The chief complaint is a group of lesions on the child’s back. You and the physician enter the room and greet the mother. A toddler is leaning over to play with the baby in her carrier on the floor. The baby appears healthy. On the chart, you notice that the baby was breast-fed from birth through her fourth month. Mom explains that the spots on the baby’s back just popped up two days ago and that the baby hasn’t had a fever and seems well. She lifts the baby up and you and the pediatrician examine the lesions – a group of eight blister-like, fluid-filled lesions localized to the left of the baby’s spine. The physician says the lesions are diagnostic. What are the lesions diagnostic of (etiologic agent and disease). List 2 lines of evidence that support your answer. Although this particular condition is somewhat unusual in babies, the lesions indicate that the baby must have experienced a common illness earlier. What was it? The mother says that, to her knowledge, the baby did not have the illness described in #2, but that her 3-year-old brother had it four months ago. Explain the link between the brother’s illness and the baby’s condition. What factors probably influenced the fact that the baby did not have symptomatic illness when her brother was experiencing it? And, what factors led to the eruptions of the lesions now? Be specific and complete in your answer. Is the condition dangerous to the baby? Why or why not? Explain your answer.
