How would the model impact you as a healthcare professional?The Innovation Model I have selected to discuss is The Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced (BPCI Advanced) Model. This model relates to payment and quality reform as it is designed to promote problem solving and patient care reform by healthcare providers with the intended goal of creating better coordinating care for patients, expenditure reduction, and the improvement of quality of care for Medicare Beneficiaries. The main focuses of the BPCI Advanced Model are care redesign, health care provider patient and caregiver engagement, data analysis and feedback and financial accountability. A lot of times, when a patient is admitted into a hospital, they are seen by a doctor who doesn’t know them or their full patient history. Thier primary care doctor may not be aware of admittance or treatment. These things can cause issues in treatment or follow up and recovery care. The BPCI Advancement Model targets these issues by having The BPCI Advancement Participant take on the responsibility for ensuring the patients entire health care team, from all health care settings, are communicating and collaborating on the quality and the total cost of care. The model enables the care team and facilities to work together through the extent of the patient’s treatment, to meet the care needs of the patient. Doing this supports a successful recovery, provides the highest quality of care, and reduces the length and rate of reoccurrence of hospital stays that could have been preventable or emergency department admittances. By putting the patient first better-quality care is achieved. BPCI Advanced takes all the costs related to the treatment and care provided to a Medicare beneficiary and lumps them into a single payment, allowing for a simpler payment approach. In doing all of the things I’ve discussed the BPCI Advanced Model impacts the Triple Aim of quality, equity, and efficiency as it aligns with the framework. The quality is impacted by incentivizing providers to improve quality of care. Equity is impacted by ensuring that all patients of any background have the best quality of care through their entire care process. Lastly, efficiency is impacted by getting away from fee-for-service to focusing on the total cost approach. The shift from a volume-based to a value-based payment plan is needed to improve healthcare outcomes while still controlling costs. This transition is important as it emphasizes the quality of care given to individuals and not just rewarding healthcare providers for the quantity of care given. Focusing on quality over quantity can reduce costs of healthcare by eliminating unnecessary procedures done for the patient with no bearing on changing the health outcome. The push to value-based payment plans is fundamental to transforming the healthcare system into a more effective, efficient, and patient-focused system. When dealing with a value-based model one focuses on providing the most efficient care they can, and this typically means preventing illness and managing chronic diseases effectively, in the prevention of needing costly interventions later. Patient outcomes are at the forefront when value-based care is implemented as it rewards providers for helping to improve patients’ health instead of putting a crutch on things, if you will. Value-based models encourage a healthcare alternative that is more sustainable by aligning payments with the value of the services that have been provided, and not the volume. It also encourages innovation by healthcare providers to establish better care at lower costs by providing things such as telehealth. By transitioning the healthcare system to a value-based payment plan, we improve the quality, equity and efficiency of the healthcare system, making health outcomes better for the population and providing a more affordable, efficient healthcare system.
